Fernando Alonso has led Felipe Massa to a stunning Ferrari one-two at the season-opening Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix.

It is the Spaniard's third win in Bahrain, his 22nd career win and first since 2008 when Alonso was with Renault. It was the glamour Italian team's first one-two since the French Grand Prix in June 2008

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton finished third while seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, making a comeback at the age of 41 and after three years away, came home sixth for Mercedes in his return to F1, just ahead of reigning world champion Jenson Button.

Alonso says it is a great day for the iconic Italian manufacturer which has exceeded his expectations. He says to be first and second is the result the team deserves after the work they put in during the off season and coming back to the top of the podium is very special.

Massa completed a remarkable return to Formula One in his first race since sustaining life-threatening head injuries in Hungary last July.

The Brazilian is thankful to have been able to take his place on the grid, and he is thanking God that he has been able to make it to Bahrain.

German Sebastien Vettel finished fourth after starting from pole position and leading for 34 of the 49 lap race.
