A new independent rugby league commission has been given the green light.

The ARL has given provisional support to the appointment of a new commission. The game has been equally owned by the ARL and Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd since 1997 in the wake of the News-run breakaway Super League competition.

The ARL says the commission will be a not-for-profit entity that will include the dominant New South Wales and Queensland Rugby Leagues as well as the 16 National Rugby League clubs.

ARL chairman Colin Love says they have agreed in-principle, but a huge amount of detail still needs to be worked through.

The 2010 NRL kicks-off tonight, with the the Eels hosting the Dragons and the Cowboys squaring off against the Broncos.
