Hurricanes and All Blacks utility Tamati Ellison will head for the Land of the Rising Sun at the end of the Super 14 season.

The 2009 All Black will activate an out-clause in his New Zealand Rugby Union contract and head off to Japan before this year's Air New Zealand Cup.

Ellison has made the tough decision to turn his back on the game in his homeland in preference to securing the lucrative deal and the future of his family.
