Study says remove GST from healthy foods

11/03/2010 17:36:01

An Otago University researcher claims he has a compelling case for removing GST from healthy foods.

Professor Tony Blakely says a year-long study has observed 1,100 shoppers' healthy eating habits.

Using Health Foundation guidelines as a benchmark, researchers found that providing nutritional information did not have much impact on heathy choices. However, if 12.5 percent was removed from the price, there was an 11 percent increase in the buying of healthy food.

Professor Blakely says if the health of the nation is to be taken seriously, removing GST from healthy food needs to be considered.
