Americas Cup lifts interest in Louis Vuitton regatta

09/03/2010 7:24:01

Louis Vuitton trophy sailing organiser Bruno Trouble expects the Auckland regatta starting today to build on recent progress made with the America's Cup.

It is the second time the series has been held on the Waitemata Harbour, following up from last year's successful inaugural event.

Trouble says Oracle's America's Cup win seems to have rejuvenated some interest in the Louis Vuitton series. He says eight America's Cup syndicates have gathered in Auckland for the regatta, which forms the third leg in a global series.

Last year's inaugural series on the Waitemata Harbour was hailed as a great success and Trouble expects this year's competition to be even better.

Trouble says during the regatta he will be discussing the future of the America's Cup with Oracle CEO Russell Coutts. He says he will open discussions but it will be difficult to talk about much given there is no date and format confirmed.

The opening day to the round robin series sees Team New Zealand take on Artemis first up this morning. There are seven days of round robin sailing before the semi finals and final.
