Blogger unveils another suppressed name

09/02/2010 15:56:01

Blogger Cameron Slater has revealed yet another suppressed name.

The Aucklander made another court appearance today on five charges relating to breaches of court suppressions. He is expecting police to lay two more charges, one over his latest revelation, the name of a Manawatu man convicted of downloading pornography, including child porn.

Slater says the perpetrator of the heinous crime merely got four months home detention and he is not worried at the prospect of a fine of up to $1,000 for making the name public. He believes the weight of public opinion will eventually force a law change to wipe suppression.

Unicef has joined the furore over the name suppression granted to the Manawatu man. The organisation is concerned at the judge's statement there was no offending against any individuals within New Zealand.

Unicef New Zealand spokeswoman Barbara Lambourn, says any child pornography is extremely harmful to every child, no matter where they live. She says New Zealanders can be charged in courts here for sexual offences against children in other countries and New Zealanders' offending against children overseas should be treated in exactly the same way.
